Where did the name "Bircher" Porridge originate?
We derived the recipe for our Bircher Porridge from the classic Bircher muesli – the mother of all mueslis, so to speak. Bircher muesli was named after its inventor, the Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner, and originally contained just four ingredients: milk, oat flakes, grated apple and hazelnuts. For our modern take on the dish in the form of a porridge we took the original recipe and pepped it up with figs, dates and sultanas, rounding it off with almonds instead of hazelnuts. The latter also prolong the shelf life of the porridge.
How do I prepare the Bircher Porridge?
Simply place 50g (6 tbsp) of porridge mix in a bowl, pour over approx. 100ml of boiling water or 80ml of hot milk or a plant-based alternative (depending on the desired creaminess) and stir well. Leave to stand for three minutes and enjoy hot. Our porridge is also great for making Overnight Oats: just use a larger quantity of cold water or cold milk and and leave the oat mixture to stand in the fridge overnight. If you like you can also top it off with some fresh fruit, such as sliced apple.
I'm gluten intolerant. Can I still enjoy Bircher Porridge without having to worry?
Yes! All of our gluten-free breakfast products carry the gluten-free quality seal. As well as certifying that the porridge ingredients contain no gluten, this also requires striuct compliance with a series of steps before the porridge is even produced on our premises. The process begins with examination of the seeds and inspection of the crop fields and continues right through to proper cleaning of combine harvesters, forklifts and the entire production facility. We thus ensure that even people with severe gluten intolerance can still enjoy our porridges and mueslis for breakfast.
Have you any other gluten-free porridge varieties in your range?
Yes, in fact we have lots! Our fruity Blueberry & Apple Porridge, very berry Strawberry & Chia Porridge, exotic Coconut & Apricot Porridge, tasty Chocolate & Banana Sport Porridge and aromatic Coconut & Orange Rice Porridge are not only certified gluten free, but also contain zero animal products.
