What is porridge exactly?
Generally speaking, porridge is a hot oatmeal purée based on two main ingredients: hot milk or water and traditional flaked oats. Mixed together, they produce a nutritious breakfast that supplies your body with energy for the day's activities, be they sport, work or leisure.
In the USA porridge is known as oatmeal, and variations are also found in Asian countries, though here they are often based on rice or quinoa instead of oats. It's pretty much a global classic.
The popular breakfast dish contains lots of fibre and healthy proteins and is faster to prepare than you might expect. So whenever you feel like a healthy breakfast, anyone can whip up a bowl of porridge in the morning – no matter whether you're a vegan, an athlete or simply a lover of good food. Incidentally, at Verival we also offer gluten-free varieties so that gluten-intolerant and gluten-sensitive porridge fans don't have to miss out!
What ingredients do we use in our Verival organic porridges?
All our organic porridge mixes are produced in the Austrian Tyrol and – following the classic porridge formula – are based on oat bran, or gluten-free flaked oats for our gluten-free varieties.
Oats supply your body with plenty of healthy energy, because the complex carbohydrates they contain keep you feeling full for longer and help stabilise your blood sugar levels. Perfect for staving off those late-morning hunger pangs!
Porridge contains lots of important vitamins, minerals and fibre besides, and we also supplement our porridge mixes with great extras such as crunchy almonds, wholesome seeds, and fruit pieces for natural sweetness.

Of course, you can always ring the changes yourself whenever you fancy by adding other ingredients such as fresh fruit, nuts, seeds or spices.
Also, why not experiment with different kinds of plant drinks such as oat milk, coconut milk or soya milk instead of water or cow's milk? Just try them all until you find your personal favourite. By the way, don't forget that many of our porridges are vegan, gluten free and without added sugar. And preparing them is simply child's play.

When creating new recipes we're inspired by nutritional philosophies from all over the globe. In our search for an especially beneficial diet we happened upon the Five Elements Theory, the dietary philosophy behind TCM, from which we developed three delicious, finely balanced TCM porridges that make every morning a good morning.
Overnight Oats – quick and easy
Overnight Oats is basically a special kind of porridge that is very similar to classic Swiss Bircher muesli. Simply place the flaked oats in a bowl with milk or water and leave them to soak in the fridge overnight for a refreshing breakfast next morning. Good news for sports fans!
Our Verival Sport Porridge delivers a perfect dose of morning energy and is the ideal breakfast before all kinds of endurance training as well as other sports. The gluten-free oatmeal porridge base is blended with a mix of bananas, dates, linseeds, maca powder and sunflower & pumpkin seed protein powder, enriched with Austrian-made chocolate with a cocoa content of 70%.

Porridge basic recipe
The Scottish porridge is easy and can be prepared quickly. You only need three basic ingredients and can then add your favorite fruits and spices.
- 180 ml milk
- 3-4 tablespoons of oatmeal
- 1 pinch of salt
Bring the milk to a boil in a saucepan. When the milk is boiling, add the oatmeal and switch the stove to a low setting. Let the porridge simmer for about 5 minutes. Don't forget to keep stirring with a wooden spoon, because the hot milk likes to burn in the saucepan. In addition, the porridge gets a nice creamy texture.
Finally, take the pot off the stove and let the porridge soak until it has reached the optimal consistency for you. Finally, add a pinch of salt for that certain something. This emphasizes the taste of the oatmeal even more, whether you want to enjoy your porridge with sweet or savory toppings.
50g porridge (6 tbsp) +
100 ml of water or
80 ml milk or plant drink
Pour the mixture into boiling water, stir and let it steep for 3 minutes. Add a dash of milk or vegetable drink for an extra creamy result.
In the microwave
Mix the mixture with liquid and heat on medium heat (600 watts) for 1-2 minutes. Stir briefly and warm again for about a minute.
Twice as good!

What's special about Verival Porridge?
Our porridge mixes are produced from premium-quality organic ingredients, in accordance with our Verival philosophy. Because we're passionate about doing our bit to preserve an intact natural environment, for the insects that pollinate our crops and everyone else besides.
Wherever possible we also opt for ingredients grown in our local region, to support domestic agriculture and keep transport distances as short as possible. Biodiversity is another important aspect – by cultivating heritage grain varieties we're doing do our bit to preserve traditional, diverse arable farming practices. And the nice thing about it is that it's good for us as well as the environment! That's because carefully grown and processed ingredients are easier for our bodies to digest and absorb.
None of our products contain colourings or preservatives. We're also very careful about the amount of sugar we use in our products, and constantly taste and tweak our recipes accordingly. We also offer a number of varieties with no added sugar at all. Instead they are gently sweetened with fruits such as dates or apples.
Where did porridge originate?
The ancient Germanic tribes are known to have enjoyed hot porridge at all times of the day. The Romans eventually adopted the dish and took it with them to the British Isles, where it took Scotland by storm. The Scots like their porridge savoury with a pinch of salt, and tradition apparently dictated that it should only be prepared with water, never milk. Each spoonful of hot porridge was then dipped in cold buttermilk, cream or milk before eating. Why not give it a try? Who knows, perhaps you'll prefer it that way too!
Today, modern porridge is trending all over the world, which is hardly surprising. After all, it's healthy and it tastes great too – what's not to like?!
What porridge varieties are there in the Verival range?
Basically, we differentiate between our slightly sweetened porridges based on super-nutritious oat bran, such as Blackberry or Apricot & Honey, our gluten-free varieties with no added sugar, such as Strawberry & Chia or Blueberry & Apple, and our two savoury blends, Broccoli and Pumpkin & Tomato. In fact, our range now contains no less than 11 different varieties to choose from!
For those who lead an active lifestyle we've created a special Sport Porridge with an extra-high protein content. Vegan and gluten free, it delivers enough energy for a top performance, whether on the sports field or in the office.
If you fancy trying a slightly more exotic porridge, our varieties featuring mango, physalis or coconut are just the thing for you. On the other hand, if you prefer a more traditional recipe we've also got Poppy Seed & Plum and Bircher Porridge in our range. That's diversity for you!

Cooking porridge with a kettle

Porridge out of the saucepan
