DIY: Plant Milk from Grains & Pseudo Grains

You love soymilk in your muesli, you add rice milk to your porridge and you like to top your smoothie off with some almond milk? Well, then you probably know the drill: If you don’t pay close enough attention you will end up buying products with tons of sugar, aroma and additives that no one wants in their plant-based milk alternative. Plus, you will assemble enough packaging to establish a tetra pack graveyard at home. There is a solution to this problem, though: DIY!

“Making your own soy or rice milk you are guaranteed to both consume healthier products and reduce the amount of household waste since you eliminate buying boxes of milk”

Add your favourite organic ingredients, choose a program and voilà!

Before you even think about how this could be too much work and write the plant milk back on the shopping list, let us explain to you just how easy AND SOY is to handle. Nan Zhao, founder of AND SOY, worked closely together with Dottings-designers to adapt her soy, rice and nut milk maker – which in China is even more popular than coffee machines – for the European market. The kitchen appliance is hardly any bigger than a kettle but can do anything and even more than a mixer or smoothie maker could do: It cooks, chops, blends and creates plant drink alternatives for porridge, smoothies, soups and baby food within a matter of minutes. The best thing about it, however, is that you can always be sure what’s in it.

You can find yummy recipes and ideas on how to use the AND SOY Maker plus organic soy beans in their online shop. And because food should always be a feast for the eyes, too, they are also offering some chic bamboo dishware.

Chia, Coconut, Quinoa – what are we going to have today?

As we don’t grow tired of saying: variety is the spice of life and you’ll definitely never get bored again when it comes to choosing a plant-based drink for your muesli or porridge: almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, coconut, adzuki beans, mung beans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame, chia, flax, quinoa, millet or oats – you can use whichever seeds, nuts, grains and legumes your heart desires.

We, for instance, love using grain-based drinks for our Heritage Grains Mueslis, Crunchies and Porridges, so here is AND SOY’s recipe for a home-made version:

Plant-based milk made from grains or pseudo grains

Ingredients:

1 measuring cup of organic brown rice (or organic millet, spelt, rye, corn, barley, quinoa, etc.)
1 tsp. of organic linseed or rapeseed oil
dash of salt
2-3 organic pitted dates

How to:
1. Put the soaked and washed grains directly in the Maker.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients.
3. Add cold water to mark.
4. Start Program 2.
5. Optional: add 1 tbsp. of grated coconut or sesame seeds.
