Mueslis without milk? Which liquid goes with my muesli?

There are various reasons why more and more people want to or have to give up cow’s milk.

Maybe you are a vegetarian or vegan and animal welfare is close to your heart? Or you can’t or don’t want to consume animal milk for health reasons? There are many reasons, but you should never have to give up a delicious and healthy breakfast.

So that you can continue to enjoy your muesli, we have listed some delicious milk alternatives that go perfectly with muesli, porridge or granola.

Muesli without milk – what are the Advantages?

More and more people are going vegan, which means they give up all animal foods. Of course, this also includes abstaining from consuming milk and dairy products.

Of course, there are also people who have a lactose intolerance or do without milk for other health reasons.

Cow’s milk is known to many people as a healthy food. Recently, however, there have been more and more critical voices casting doubt on this opinion. There are various studies that assume that cow’s milk is not healthy for humans. Among other things, it is even said to be carcinogenic.

Generally speaking, milk is intended as food for the offspring of the respective mammal. For this reason, many people who pay attention to healthy nutrition avoid cow’s milk and products that contain milk. In addition, most plant-based alternatives are lower in fat and calories.

People who suffer from lactose intolerance experience health problems after consuming products that contain lactose, such as abdominal pain to severe cramps and digestive difficulties like diarrhoea or flatulence. Therefore, these people should avoid cow’s milk and dairy products that contain lactose.

What milk alternatives are there for my muesli?

Are you also one of those people who consume less milk or would like to do without milk altogether? Then you are probably asking yourself what alternatives there are to classic cow’s milk, so that you can continue to enjoy your organic muesli from Verival, which is certified organic, for breakfast. There are now many plant-based alternatives to milk, but fruit juices, smoothies or water also go well with muesli.

Healthy breakfast

For many people, muesli is simply part of a healthy breakfast. Muesli comes in a wide variety of flavours and can be combined in different ways. Whether with milk or yoghurt, with dried fruit or fresh fruit, there is a recipe to suit every taste. Muesli contains a lot of fibre, vitamins and minerals as well as long-chain carbohydrates. These keep you full for a long time and have a positive effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

Muesli with vegetable Milk

There are now many plant-based milk alternatives for the vegan diet. Each of these vegan milk drinks tastes different, so you have a lot of variety and can try out which plant milk you like best with your muesli. Here you can find out which plant-based milk drinks are available on the market and which characteristics distinguish these Drinks.

Oat milk – ecologically good

Oat milk tastes neutral and only slightly sweet. Since oats are native to our region, this vegetable drink is a very ecological alternative. The oats are ground, cooked and emulsified with vegetable oil. Oat milk can also be easily made at home. This is an inexpensive and ecological solution.

Almond milk – sweet plant drink

Almond milk has a sweet taste that is slightly reminiscent of marzipan. The vegan drink made from almonds is gluten-free and can therefore also be enjoyed without problems by people who have an intolerance in this regard.

Almond milk can be easily prepared at home by soaking almonds in water and then pureeing and filtering them.

Since a lot of water is needed to grow almonds, almond milk is not the best alternative to cow’s milk from an ecological point of view.

Almond milk

A recipe on how to make your own almond milk with just two ingredients.
Prep Time15 mins
8 hrs
Total Time8 hrs 15 mins
Servings: 1 litre

Ingredients

  • 200 g almonds
  • 1 tbsp Dates, agave syrup or date syrup for sweetening
  • 1 litre water
  • 1 pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Soak the almonds in a bowl of warm water.
  • Leave the almonds covered with water overnight.
  • The next day, pour off the water.
  • Then put the almonds in your blender with about twice as much water and some sweetener. Also add some salt to make your almond milk last longer.
  • Afterwards, sieve the almond milk briefly so that the milk no longer contains any chunks. The best way to do this is to use a nut milk bag through which you squeeze the nut milk over a bowl.

Classic soy milk – neutral taste

Soy milk is very rich in protein and has a neutral, slightly nutty taste. Soy milk is now available in every supermarket. Compared to cow’s milk, soy milk has a higher protein and lower fat content.

The soy that is used usually comes from Europe and is grown without genetic engineering. The dried soybeans are soaked, cooked and pureed.

Rice milk – perfect for allergy sufferers

Due to the fact that rice milk is low in allergens, this plant-based drink is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers. Rice milk is neutral in taste and has a higher proportion of calories and a lower proportion of protein compared to other alternative milk Drinks.

Hemp milk

Compared to other vegan drinks, hemp milk contains more fat but less carbohydrates in the form of sugar and is thus lower in calories overall. Hemp milk can also be easily made at home.

Coconut milk – refreshing sweetness

Coconut milk, which can be used as a milk alternative, is very different from the coconut milk used in Asian cuisine. This is why this drink is usually called coconut drink in supermarkets. In contrast to the Asian coconut milk, the coconut drink has a higher water content and consists of only 1% fat. The coconut drink has a sweet taste and is very refreshing, especially when chilled.

Spelt milk

For spelt milk, the spelt grains are finely ground, soaked, mashed and filtered. Since spelt is also native to our region, this drink is particularly environmentally friendly. Spelt milk has a slightly mealy taste, contains little protein but many carbohydrates compared to cow’s milk.

Nut milk

Nut milk can be made from any nut. It contains many vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids and therefore has positive effects on health.

Depending on which nut is used, the taste varies.

Hazelnut milk is a very popular variety because it has a sweet, nutty taste. Another advantage of the hazelnut is its regionality.

Lupine milk – protein supplier

Like soybeans, lupins belong to the legume family. They contain more fibre and protein and less fat than soybeans. Lupins also score points in terms of regionality.

The drink made from lupins tastes relatively neutral and can also be easily made at home by soaking, boiling, puréeing and filtering the lupin husks.

Muesli with fruit juice

Instead of cow’s milk or a vegan milk alternative, you can also add fruit juice such as orange juice or apple juice to your muesli. The fruit juice makes your breakfast a refreshing and fruity affair.

Muesli and water

To save calories, you can also prepare your muesli with water. For example, muesli with oat flakes soaked in boiling water makes a delicious porridge. If you like, you can of course also try the muesli with cold water, but this is a matter of taste.

Muesli in combination in a smoothie

If muesli tastes good with fruit juice, why shouldn’t muesli taste good with a smoothie? The advantages of the smoothie are on the one hand the somewhat thicker consistency compared to fruit juice and on the other hand that there are usually several types of fruit in a Smoothie.
