Porridge is becoming increasingly popular. Also known as oatmeal, the healthy breakfast is full of vitamins and minerals that guarantee a successful day at the start.

The basis of porridge are oat flakes. These contain important nutrients such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc and numerous antioxidants.

Porridge is traditionally prepared in a pot. In order that nothing burns while cooking, the porridge should be stirred constantly. The preparation of the porridge in the microwave is much easier. But isn’t microwave food much less healthy and just something for in between?

How to prepare a meal in the microwave

The most important part of a microwave is an electric tube, which ensures that electricity is converted into magnetic waves. A wave stirrer is responsible for distributing the generated waves in the cooking chamber.

The metal walls then reflect the waves so that they can penetrate the food to be heated from any side.

This causes the water molecules in the food to vibrate. This in turn creates friction, the friction produces heat and the result is a heated food.

This myth persists! The rumour that food from the microwave loses nutrients is particularly popular.

The German Institute of Nutrition Research (DlfE) confirms: when food is heated professionally, not many more vitamins and minerals are lost than when cooking on the stove or in the oven. However, this only applies if, for example, the vegetables were cooked particularly gently and at very low heat.

It should also be noted that vitamins are water-soluble. The more water is used for cooking, the fewer vitamins are still present in the vegetables after preparation. However, much less water is used when cooking in the microwave, so microwave vegetables often contain much more vitamins!

If you follow a few hints, the microwave food tastes almost as delicious as after cooking it on the stove.

But not all food can be prepared in the microwave. Foods with a shell, such as eggs and sausages, are not suitable for microwave preparation. The water they contain cannot escape during cooking, so they tend to burst. And who likes to clean the microwave afterwards?

Meat and fish can be prepared well in smaller quantities. It is important that the food is not prepared in plastic containers. Microwave irradiation also heats the plastic. This causes the smallest amounts of the plastic’s plasticizers to be released. These plasticizers are very harmful to health and can also be found in microwaveable plastics. It is therefore better to heat the food in ceramic or glass dishes.

Incidentally, microwaves do not emit dangerous radiation. The Institute for Occupational and Social Medicine in Aachen considers this fear to be unfounded because microwaves are maintained and controlled at regular intervals. Even the ancient and cheap models only allow the smallest possible radiation to escape, which is absolutely not harmful to health.

Now to the main question: can I prepare porridge in the microwave and is it healthy at all? The answer: sure, you can! There are no bowls to prevent any water from escaping.

With the right settings and the right ingredients, nothing stands in the way of your porridge from the microwave!

The advantage of preparing porridge in the microwave is that you do not have to stir constantly to avoid burning. In addition, the preparation is much faster than in a pot.

Especially when it is hectic in the morning. Just put the mixture into the microwave and wait a short time. Then stir quickly, add toppings and enjoy.

  • It is very easy to make your porridge in the microwave. All you have to do is put 50 g of porridge with 250 ml of milk or a plant-based alternative in a microwave-proof bowl.
  • Then put the bowl in the microwave at medium heat for 1.5 minutes. Afterwards take the bowl out of the microwave for a bit and stir the mixture well.
  • Then put the porridge back in the microwave for another 1.5 minutes.
  • When it is done, you can add toppings of your choice to your porridge.

Now how does porridge from the microwave work?

Grab a microwaveable bowl and add the basic ingredients for your porridge. Oat flakes, water and milk are the classics. Here at Verival you will also find a wide variety of porridge.

Then you let the meal run at full power for two to two and a half minutes. Is this your first time making porridge in a microwave? Then keep an eye on the dish and if necessary rescue it from the microwave a little earlier. The oats should boil up completely once, with the entire mass rising up to the edge of the bowl once.

Then take the porridge out of the microwave, make sure you don’t burn your fingers and stir everything well. Even if everything still looks a bit soupy, stay calm: the oats still swell and thicken by themselves. It’s best to let the porridge rest for a few more minutes and start topping your porridge!

Toppings for your porridge from the microwave


Fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, chia seeds and spices can be combined to your heart’s content. You should be careful with the amount of chia seeds; they swell up a lot and make you very full in the end.

Berries and other fruits from the freezer should be added to the dish before you put it in the microwave so that you do not have to chew frozen fruits. You don’t have to pay too much attention to the seeds and nuts; let your imagination and mood run wild and design your healthy breakfast with many important nutrients and extravagant toppings – after that you’ll definitely be full!
